About indiedepths

indiedepths is an independent publication and podcast exploring culture, technology, ownership, and the people building beyond dominant corporate ecosystems.

Go beneath the surface

The most visible platforms are not the whole world. Independent developers, artists, filmmakers, writers, maintainers, archivists, and communities are creating worthwhile work every day—often without the reach or resources of the systems surrounding them.

indiedepths exists to find that work, understand it on its own terms, and help readers make more deliberate choices about the media and technology in their lives.

What we cover

  • Independent games — creators, criticism, design, distribution, and preservation.
  • Open systems — software, operating systems, protocols, self-hosting, and usable alternatives.
  • Independent film and media — film, audio, journalism, publishing, and new routes to audiences.
  • Ownership and preservation — digital rights, physical media, repair, archives, and lasting access.

The publication is deliberately broader than gaming or technology alone. The common thread is independence: who controls the work, how people discover it, and whether readers can continue to access what matters to them.

How we approach the work

We aim to be curious rather than reflexively contrarian, critical without becoming performative, accessible without flattening complexity, and supportive of creators without becoming uncritical promotion.

That means distinguishing reporting from opinion, making disclosures visible, linking to primary sources, correcting meaningful mistakes, and treating practical guides as material that must be reviewed—not published once and forgotten.
